This 23rd and 24th of October, the Center for Urban Sustainability and Low Carbon City are pleased to invite you to the fourth Low Carbon City World Forum.

In 2019 Costa Rica will host the Fourth Low Carbon City World Forum. After successful editions in Medellín (2016), Villahermosa (2017), and París (2018) the event arrives to the city of San José de Costa Rica.

This is a global event, led by citizens, which aims to spread knowledge and promote innovative solutions to collectively build new, low carbon and climate change resilient cities.

Forum topics:

Cities as spaces of opportunities for climate action.

Cities occupy less than 3% of the planet’s surface, and yet they are the largest emitters of greenhouse gas emissions, that are behind climate change. As the main sources of these emissions are the energy consumed by buildings and transport, cities are then the best centers of innovation for the implementation of climate actions. In the framework of this forum we want to discuss cities as spaces that address the following topics in the search for their decarbonisation

  • Energy,
  • Transport,
  • Agriculture,
  • Biodiversity,
  • The circular economy,
  • Innovation and technology for sustainable development,
  • Public space and sustainable habitat.

Communication and pedagogy: talking, communicating and teaching climate change.

Though there is longstanding interest and literature on the topic of public advocacy and communication efforts on climate change, a large part of the public remains disinterested in addressing the issue, or paradoxically paralyzed when contemplating the seriousness of the situation. As we observe this phenomena, we want to understand the nature and dynamics of the population’s perceptions of climate change in order to innovate and develop effective communication and education strategies on the subject.

The forum will address the following questions:

How should we communicate on climate change?

How do you teach, share knowledge and build a pedagogy around climate change?

The host: Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small country, with a large international recognition for its leadership in the area of
conservation and recently for its ambitious goals in climate action and decarbonization, this naturally makes an ideal host for the Low Carbon City World Forum.

This year, Costa Rica wil also host the pre-conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-25). The Forum will then become a space parallel to the pre-COP, to strengthencitizen participation in international climate governance, and so that they may demand more ambitious in national and international goals from their representatives.

Organisers:
